What is Anaemia?
Anaemia is a dangerous health condition in which the number of our body’s oxygen-carrying cells reduces from the usual. These cells are better known as red blood cells or RBCs. Anaemia can also be a result of a decrease in hemoglobin (an essential type of protein) in RBCs.
What is Chronic Anaemia?
Chronic anaemia is a condition wherein other health conditions interfere in the process of the formation of red blood cells. It is also known as anaemia of chronic disease and anaemia of inflammation.
But, the question arises, how anaemia is even related to chronic kidney disease or what type of anaemia is associated with it?
The heroic functions performed by the kidneys…
We have heard a million times that the kidneys perform life-saving functions, but what exactly are they? Apart from blood filtration and elimination of wastes and toxins, these bean-shaped organs, also release life-sustaining hormones.
The two main hormones released by the kidneys are Vitamin D and Erythropoietin
Vitamin D is essential for several crucial functions in the body. Already, there are some amounts of Vitamin D present in the blood, but not in an active state. The kidneys with other tissues modify to activate it. Activated Vitamin D is requisite for the uptake of calcium from the food. It helps in the maintenance of bone health, also, improves reflexes of the immune system against infections.
Healthy kidneys produce hormones called Erythropoietin (EPO). A hormone which is a type of chemical that helps to trigger or regulate many special functions in our body. EPO induces bone marrow to form red blood cells, which then carry oxygen throughout the body. In such a situation, it is natural to complain of anemia in kidney disease.
Because, when the kidneys are not able to function correctly, they do not make enough EPO. As a result, bone marrow creates fewer red blood cells, and anemia troubles begin. When the red blood cells in the blood are low, the flow of oxygen also decreases and slows down. People with kidney disease are deficient in other elements that promote anemia complaints.

What are the complications of anemia in a patient with chronic kidney disease?
Irregular heartbeat or abnormally fast heartbeat, especially while exercising. This is another sign of weakness of the heart. This is also not uncommon in kidney disease. Harmful increase in muscle mass in the heart. Or heart failure, which does not mean that the heart stops working abruptly. Instead, cardiovascular dysfunction is a prolonged condition in which the heart is not able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s requirements. It is a common problem in people born with anemia.

Medical history
Considering medical history is one of the first things a health care provider can do to diagnose anaemia. Before proceeding further, he may ask several questions.
Physical exam
A physical examination can help diagnose anemia. During a physical examination, a health care provider usually examines a patient’s body, including an examination for changes in skin color.
Blood Test
A complete blood count can be helpful in the diagnosis of anemia. It helps in measuring the number of blood cells and the type of blood. It will help the healthcare provider to know the amount of hemoglobin in the blood of the patients. The problem of anemia can be detected in males and females when they are 15. At this age, the hemoglobin in man can go down to 13 g/dL, whereas in females, it goes down below 12 g/dL. Physicians say that when the kidney loses half of its functioning and has very low hemoglobin, then low EPO production can be a cause of anemia in chronic kidney disease.
Anemia of chronic kidney disease causes a keen effect on patients. The impact of anemia is not bound to fatigue or dizziness, but it creates more adverse and deadly effects on the health of humans. It is associated with problems like cardiovascular complications and congestive heart failure. Patients with diabetes may face loss in the functioning of the kidneys due to anemia. Anemia causes the problem of hypoxia in patients that further stimulates the pathways that regulate the blood pressure in the human body.
All these factors worsen the condition of proteinuria as it increases the level of protein in the tubules of the kidneys in diabetic patients. Also, patients with type 2 diabetes have anemia as an independent risk factor that can affect their kidney functioning. Anemia of chronic kidney disease can also progress diabetic neuropathy. Some of the other effects that anemia causes on the body are impaired life quality, mental acuity, etc.
