What is a chronic kidney disease in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda says urine formation starts in the intestine, and filtration occurs in the kidneys. When there is an imbalance of Agni, it also disturbs the process of formation and filtration of urine. If the urine is malformed, it leads to the accumulation of wastes in the body. This toxins accumulation is known as ‘ama sanchaya’ in Ayurveda.

The toxins formed due to weak Agni accumulate in the srotas. It also leads to obstructions in the channels. These are later found responsible for or one of the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease.

This ‘ama’ accumulation in a duration of time shows the following symptoms –

  • Decreased GFR
  • Heaviness
  • Oedema (in the later stages)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • Raised values of creatinine and urea

According to Ayurveda, kidney diseases come under Mutravahasrotas vikar. The digested food is further divided into two parts.

  • Sara Bhag (essential/nutritional component of food)
  • Kitta Bhag (The waste part forms stool, urine and sweat).

Sara bhaga is used to form the rasa. Rasa meets the body’s nutritional requirements by converting it into other dhatus.

Vyana Vata, as per Ayurveda, helps in the formation of urine. Apana vata handles the elimination of urine. So while treating CKD, we take care of both of the Vayus.

Can someone with stage kidney disease 3 recover well?

Before starting with the treatment, we must undergo some basic blood tests. Serum creatinine treatment in ayurveda. These are to be repeated after 45 days with the same lab. We at Karma Ayurveda have successfully treated CKD with Ayurvedic medicines. The medicines are herbal and suggested along with a diet and Yoga instructions. An improvement in blood tests is expected in 45 days. Strong results will be evident in a few months, depending on the patient’s condition.

For dialysis patients, we can redo tests even after a week. The tests should be at the same time before and after dialysis. We have a huge data bank of patients recovering from dialysis and other Kidney Diseases. The dependence on dialysis reduces and is also seen to stop after some time. It is also seen that people following a proper diet and lifestyle recover faster than others.
